Philadelphia police were left baffled after a small casket containing the organs of an infant child and wrapped in a black garbage bag was found on the street Monday night.
The casket, which police said had been recently pried open, was discovered across from Mt. Vernon Cemetery in North Philadelphia.
The city’s medical examiner confirmed the body parts came from a young child.
“They believed they belonged to an infant or a young child,” said Philadelphia police chief inspector Scott Small. “What’s unusual is other than the bag of organs there’s no body.”
Police used cadaver dogs to search Mt. Vernon and another nearby cemetery, but no freshly opened graves were discovered, according to ABC affiliate WPVI.
