As Mobb Deep producer Havoc performed the legendary group’s hits without his late partner in rhyme, nearly 4,000 miles away homage was paid by another Queensbridge native of note. The great Nas transitioned from his own classics in order to pay his late friend and rap peer Prodigy respects.
Nas took to Instagram to post pictures and videos from his show in Denmark on Friday, June 30. Fans from the Scandinavian country put their hands in the air at his command and then ensued to bounce as Nas sang along to “Shook Ones, Part II.” Erected on a massive screen behind him was a photograph of P. “Say R-I-P … Prodigy,” he’d then holler, starting a call and response, before shouting his love out to the heavens.
Nas is one of the artists who is feeling the loss of the H.N.I.C. rapper the most. They were comrades in the rap game back in the 90’s when Queens may not have had the glitz that the smooth Brooklyn rappers of the day had, but stood its own as one of the epicenters of the genre as the days of Marley Marl, Run DMC, LL Cool J and Kool G Rap transitioned on the backs of a grittier generation.
